Essenza Mediterranea

The history of Essenza Mediterranea is recent, but has its long and deep roots in the Middle Ages and is intertwined with the history of Altomonte, a small village in the heart of Magna Graecia (today we are in Calabria) in the province of Cosenza. The local alchemical tradition begins in the year 1021 with the Benedictine monks, but we have to get to 1879 when, having changed the monastic pharmacopoeia into the art of liqueurs, the Giacobini family founded the company which became not only a Royal Liquor factory, but also the largest reality of the Bourbon kingdom, producing various award-winning specialties such as vermouth, xeres and various elixirs and rosolis based on local herbs and citrus fruits. Unfortunately, Giacobini's business closed in 1938, but it was precisely within this historic company that the adventure of Carlo Moliterno began, forefather of the family and founder of the company of the same name, who realized his dream by starting a company in 1939. of liqueurs and carbonated drinks based only on local products. Today, Vittorio Gargaglione, one of the heirs of the Moliterno family, is part of this long path characterized by a tradition, as we have seen, that goes back a century. It is a new project, which joins the family activities, with the aim of valorising and promoting the territory and the wonders of the Mediterranean, the exceptional theater of this long tradition. The labels produced are born from artisanal processes, carried out in very small batches, using natural and predominantly indigenous ingredients, such as liquorice, cedar and bitter oranges. The result is impeccable and authentic Calabrian artisanal liqueurs, characterized by an intense, enveloping and pleasantly bitter flavour, such as the Amaro “Eroico” and the Liquorice Amaro “Elixir”, based on liquorice roots from the Ionian Coast.
