The history of this company began in 1887 when the mayor of Le François, Homère Clément, decided to purchase Domaine de L'Acajou, the best sugar plantation in Martinique, with an area of approximately 43 hectares. It was a period of crisis in the local economy due to the collapse in the price of sugar and Clément began his adventure in the production of Rhum Agricole, a type of rum obtained directly from fresh sugar cane and not from molasses. He was inspired by the Armagnac of south-western France, perfecting the production method of this distillate, now known throughout the world as Rhum Agricole. After all, Martinique has always had a great reputation for growing high-quality sugar cane, even before Homère began production. The business prospered during the First World War due to the great demand for alcohol and after Homère's death, the company passed to his children until 1986 when it was sold to the Hayot family who continued the Homère Clément tradition with the same passion. Currently, Clément's house has become a place much visited by tourists and enthusiasts of the history of rum and his Foundation has collected a large quantity of documents on Caribbean history and tradition. Every year around 160,000 visitors go to the distillery to taste the Rhum Agricole directly from the barrels of the cellars, walk in the botanical garden or admire the art objects which over time have contributed to creating the great cultural heritage of Rhum Agricole, of Clément and Martinique. The company's current production lines include: the Classic range, the Bar and Cocktail range, the Prestige range. The Classic range includes the White Rhum at 40°, 50° and 55°, the Aged Rhum and the Amber Rhum, all made with the best selection of sugar cane from the Clément plantations and the very particular "Canne Blue", the only single variety rum in the world produced from the so-called blue sugar cane, with particular aromatic qualities, excellent for cocktails. The Prestige range includes seven types of high quality rums made in limited editions, for true connoisseurs, as well as the crystal bottles in which they are sold.
