There is no doubt that today its name evokes quality South Tyrolean viticulture and in fact this autochthonous vine has a very long history that even dates back to the Middle Ages, but as a white berried grape. The first mention as grape/red wine dates back to 1525 and only from the 1990s is it produced in purity (Lagrein Dunkel) or in the Rosé version (Lagrein Kretzer); before it was mainly used as a blending wine. The most suitable areas for its cultivation are Gries, at the gates of Bolzano, and Lake Caldaro. It is a wine with good structure, acidity and also has a certain tannic texture, elements that guarantee it excellent longevity, especially in the Riserva version. As regards its organoleptic characteristics, it has a quite intense ruby red colour. On the palate it is fruity, tannic, full-bodied, with a strong and, at the same time, intriguing character.
Lagrein is a vine with ancient origins, it is even thought to date back to ancient Greece, theories confirmed by recent research. It is now one of the prides of South Tyrol and is mainly grown in the areas around Bolzano. The wine that comes from this vine is ruby red , recognizable by its fruity flavor on the palate. The red Lagrein boasts many DOC wines, as well as IGT and DOP.
