Montepulciano wine

Let's immediately clear up the inevitable confusion that can be created (due to the clamorous homonymy) between the Montepulciano vine (and wine) and the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The former is a variety of black berried grapes grown and vinified extensively in many regions of central Italy and in particular in Abruzzo . The second is a wine produced with Sangiovese, in the area of the municipality of Montepulciano, in the province of Siena. It is curious to know that Montepulciano is the second most cultivated red grape in Italy, after Sangiovese and it is used, in various proportions, to produce wines of no less than 50 types of DOC and DOCG. The most famous Montepulciano wines come from Abruzzo and the best Abruzzo examples come from the north of the region, at the foot of the Teramo Hills (Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG). But we cannot forget two other splendid realities which are the Rosso Conero (Conero DOCG) and the Rosso Piceno DOC, both from the Marches . Montepulciano is appreciated for its soft flavours, strong color and delicate tannins: but also in the rosé version, known as Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC , expresses a truly excellent, luminous and elegant wine.
