Emilia Romagna wines 

In Emilia-Romagna the history of vines and wine dates back to pre-Roman times and is linked to its most famous grape, the famous red wine , Lambrusco; we can therefore say that the vocation of this territory for the production of wine is really ancient. Furthermore, it represents one of the largest Italian wine regions, in terms of extension. The region is divided into two distinct geographical and cultural areas: Emilia, in the western part of the region and Romagna, in the eastern part. The two areas are distinguished both by the different cuisine and by the grapes that are grown and therefore the wines that are made from them. In Emilia, in the area of Piacenza, the most widespread vines are the black grape varieties, Barbera and Croatina, in primis, which characterize the denomination Gutturnio DOC and in part the Bonarda. As white grape varieties, we find the aromatic Malvasia di Candia and the white Moscato, in addition to the native Ortrugo vine. Also widespread are international vines such as Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Riesling Italico and Müller-Thurgau. The areas of Reggio Emilia and Modena are instead dominated by the cultivation of Lambrusco, in the Lambrusco Salamino, Lambrusco Maestri, Lambrusco Marani, Lambrusco Montericco and Ancellotta varieties. Montù and Pignoletto are widespread in the Bologna area, both white grapes with the denominations Reno DOC and Colli Bolognesi Classico Pignoletto DOCG. Moving to Romagna, the most important grape variety here is Sangiovese, which distances Trebbiano (the most common white grape variety in Romagna and Italy), Pagadebit and Albana in terms of quantity. The most important wine-growing areas are the hills around Faenza, the hilly area of Forlì, the hills around Cesena and Rimini. In short, the absolutely noteworthy variety of wines, combined with a marked propensity for quality and the enhancement of native vines, make this region an emerging gem in the wine scene of the entire Italian territory.
