Lazio wines

Lazio boasts a millennia-long winemaking history, especially in reference to the presence of the Etruscans, in remote times. The wine region is very extensive: certainly the most suitable areas are the hills that rise to the south-east of Rome, called Castelli Romani, dotted with medieval villages and villas, vineyards and woods. Here the white berried grapes predominate such as Malvasia del Lazio and yellow Trebbiano, an excellent white wine ; then the Bellone (autochthonous) and other international varieties (Sauvignon and Chardonnay above all). Among the black berried ones, the autochthonous Cesanese certainly stands out, which gives rise to red wines of great structure, as in the case of Cesanese del Piglio DOCG or Cesanese di Affile DOC and then Sangiovese and Montepulciano, but also Merlot, Ciliegiolo and Bombino Nero (originating in other regions). The Castelli Romani DOC is certainly the reference denomination of the area and the most famous wine is certainly the Est! East!! East!!! di Montefiascone DOC (based on Trebbiano and Malvasia), with its so suggestive history and legend. We can summarize by recalling that the wine characteristic of Lazio, up until a few years ago, was the widespread production of wine of a strictly family type, aimed at self-consumption, supported by the presence of large industrial realities and cooperatives. In recent years things have changed: today many winemakers have chosen to focus on excellent wines, exploiting above all the potential of native vines and this trend is starting to give truly surprising and, at the same time, exciting results.
