Umbrian viticulture, like most of the Italian territory, has a history that has its roots in the mists of time, but only in the last 50 years has it seen a significant revival in terms of quantity and above all quality produced. In 1968 we see the conferment of the first Umbrian DOC (Torgiano DOC), followed in 1990 by the recognition of the first DOCG (Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG). Sagrantino, the most important red wine of Umbria, sees the recognition of the DOCG in 1992 (Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG). Small in size, Umbria, with its 17,000 hectares of vineyards and a production of just over one million hl of wine/year, has a high ratio between vineyard area and total available area. The predominantly hilly morphology makes Umbria a particularly suitable region for vines: in fact, it is characterized by rather low average yields of grapes per hectare (8.7 t/ha), one of the fundamental prerequisites for the production of quality wine. Grechetto, a native grape, is the most important of the white berried ones. It is widespread throughout the region and with it both pure whites and blended wines are produced, for example with Chardonnay. Other white berried grapes are Malvasia Bianca, Trebbiano Toscano, Verdello, Canaiolo Bianco and Procanico. Sagrantino, despite its limited presence in Montefalco, produces the most representative red wines. The Montefalco area is located east of Perugia; the wines produced exclusively with Sagrantino are recognized, as we have seen, the DOCG. Sagrantino is a robust and powerful wine, with a remarkable tannic charge and a significant organoleptic richness capable of producing wines appreciated all over the world. Black berried grapes also present in Umbria are Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo Nero, Montepulciano, Barbera, in addition to the classic "international" vines.
