Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé is a sweet wine that boasts the Denomination of Controlled Origin. It is produced on the island of Pantelleria by the Donnafugata cellars of the Rallo family, active for over 150 years in the sector. Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé derives its name from the Arabic "son of the wind", the wind that constantly blows through the vineyards on the island. Here the arid climate and volcanic soil make the cultivation of vines an almost heroic activity, which requires a much higher than average manpower. The vine used is exclusively Zibibbo, originally from North Africa and arrived in Pantelleria in the wake of the Arabs hundreds of years ago. The grapes, harvested after mid-August, are dried in the sun for 3-4 weeks. A second harvest takes place in September from which a fresh must is obtained to which, during fermentation, the dried grapes are gradually added (hence the name "passito"). The result is a characteristic and unmistakable wine, in which sweetness and freshness are perfectly balanced.
