Flagship of Italian wine in the world, Bricco dell'Uccellone Braida originates from a trip to the States by its creator, Giacomo Bologna, who at the end of the seventies understood the importance of aging in barriques in wine production. It owes its name mainly to the presence of an old woman who in the past lived in a farmhouse in the nearby countryside and who, due to her appearance, was defined by the inhabitants of the area as "l'uselun", meaning the big bird in the local dialect. Bricco dell'Uccellone is a red that comes from Barbera grapes, a variety once little appreciated by winemakers, but cultivated with passion by the Braida winery, which has made it among the most prized grapes in the world today. The fruits, grown in the vineyards of Rocchetta Tanaro in the province of Asti, are left to macerate with the skins for about twenty days at a controlled temperature. The fermentation process is then followed by maturation, which takes place in 225 liter oak barrels. In French barriques the wine rests for over fifteen months, before being subjected to a period of refinement in the bottle lasting one year
