Los Vascos - Barons De Rothschild

The history of the Los Vascos Estate begins in the mid-1700s, when the Echenique family, coming from the Basque Country, began planting vines in the Peralillo area of the province of Colchagua, Chile, inspired by the French model. Success came when, towards the mid-nineteenth century, phylloxera destroyed a large part of the vineyards in Europe and all of Chile increased its sales exponentially, expanding the vineyards to 40,000 hectares. In 1988, ownership of the estate passed to the Barons de Rothschild company who called it Los Vascos, the Basques, in honor of the origins of the first owners. The position of the vineyards has proven to be particularly suitable for the cultivation of high quality vines, both due to the composition of the soil and the proximity to the Pacific Ocean which mitigates the microclimate making it sunny and ventilated to the right extent. In 1988 the extension of the estate was 220 hectares, located at approximately 130 meters above sea level. Since then Los Vascos has been expanded and modernized also with the introduction of new cultivation and winemaking techniques, developing the production of great wines such as the Grande Reserve and the Los Vascos Carmenere Grande Reserve. Today Los Vascos covers 640 hectares and is the largest in the region. The wine production is quite large and is divided into 3 collections: Saga, Légend and Rèserve. The first refers to wines suitable for everyday occasions such as Bordeux Blanc and Rouge, Pauillac and Médoc. The Légend collection brings together elegant and refined wines including Saint-Emilion: the Réserve collection, finally, includes a selection of special productions.
