The vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley have for centuries produced one of the most appreciated and representative wines of the region: the Port of the Dow's company. Its history begins at the end of the 1700s when a Portuguese merchant, Bruno de Silva, decided to move to London, starting a flourishing wine trade between Portugal and England which continued peacefully until the start of the war with Napoleon. The business continued to flourish over the centuries, with various changes of ownership, until 1961 with the Symington family who became the sole owners of the company and who still today manage a company that has become truly large and important. Currently the vineyards are located in Bonfirm, Senhora de Ribeira, Cerdeira and Santinho. The following vines are grown there: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and old mixed vines; vinification always takes place on site in special fermentation tanks. Among the main labels are Vintage Port, Quinta do Bonfirm and Crusted Port.
