Balgera

1885: this is the year of birth of the Balgera winery, which can be considered one of the oldest wineries in the whole of Valtellina, a historic land of "impossible" vineyards and wonderful wines. The history of the company is the history of the Balgera family, starting from the founder Pietro. Villa Quadrio is the historic headquarters of the winery, in the center of the town of Chiuro, a few kilometers from Sondrio; a noble residence owned by the local family of the same name. A decidedly fascinating element is the fact that today the Balgera wines are still produced, mature and aged in the same place where the winery's production activities were in full swing at the end of the nineteenth century: the five generations of the family, who have succeeded one another at the helm of the company , have ensured continuity in production, constantly innovating techniques and processing methods. As mentioned, the first to deal with wine in the family was Pietro Balgera, starting a commercial activity of Valtellina wines towards nearby Switzerland, through Valposchiavo. Curiously, this is the prevailing commercial market for the winery, but also for the entire Valtellina. Leone and Gianfranco, descendants of Pietro, dedicated themselves to developing the business, dealing with both the direct production of wine and marketing, progressively improving and refining the production process and expanding the spaces of the structure. The modern imprint, which we know today, is certainly given by Paolo Balgera who took over the management of the company in the 2000s and who set a change of pace thanks also to the application of modern processing technologies, entirely dedicated to the quality of the wines. The fifth generation, represented by the brothers Luca and Matteo, already active in the cellar, constitutes a guarantee for the future of the company, which will still see the Balgera family as protagonists, in continuity with their century-old tradition. There are approximately 6 hectares of owned vineyards, to which are added carefully selected and guided external quality suppliers, among the Valtellina terraces in the municipality of Teglio (San Giacomo and Tresenda), in the Sassella area (Triasso) and in the Grumello area (Salted Bumps). The quality of the wines begins with the work in the vineyard and makes use of two elements that our ancestors taught us to make the most of: nature and time.
