For more than a century it has been known that the Oltrepò Pavese has a particular vocation for Pinot Noir, starting from the great intuition of the Piedmontese Carlo Gancia, at the end of the 19th century. Luigi Calatroni, in 1964, had the intuition to take this path, purchasing a vineyard from his former employer. Thanks to the drive and passion of subsequent generations, this entrepreneurial adventure progressively grows up to the present day thanks to Luigi's grandchildren, Fausto and Marisa and, today, to the brothers Cristian and Stefano Calatroni. The estate surrounding the farmhouse extends for approximately fifteen hectares, all planted with the typical varieties of the area; It should be noted that the company has been in full organic conversion for a few years now: the land is cultivated following agri-environmental procedures with the minimum use of pesticide substances and insecticides. The owned vineyards are located in the municipality of Montecalvo Versiggia, at an altitude between 180 and 320 m above sea level. This small municipality in the Oltrepò Pavese stands out for the production of pinot noir. In fact, 2/3 of the vineyard surface belongs to this vine. Calatroni successfully interprets all the facets of Pinot Noir, both by vinifying it in red and in white for the Classic method sparkling wine production; it is a sometimes difficult vine, but with an excellent qualitative yield, if placed in the right conditions. As we well know, we have the best expressions in Burgundy, with very classy reds and in Champagne, for the production of the most famous sparkling wine in the world. And in fact, even in the Calatroni catalogue, a Classic Method of the highest level stands out, "NorEma", which in the 2013 vintage won the most coveted recognition in the Italian wine scene, namely the 3 Bicchieri in the Gambero Rosso Guide. But we can still find real excellence in the calatroni proposal, such as the Classic Method sparkling wines “Pinot 64”, the still red wines such as “Fioravanti” and white wines such as the “Unico” made from 100% Pinot Bianco grapes.
