Cantine Garrone represents one of the last bastions of heroic and forgotten viticulture, located in a mountain area with an ancient wine-growing vocation: we are in Val d'Ossola, Northern Piedmont, close to the Alps. It is a little-known area from the point of oenological point of view, but capable of offering high quality wines, comparable to Valtellina. This area was entirely cultivated with vines, before the arrival of the disastrous phylloxera, at the end of the 19th century, which subsequently devastated almost all the vineyards in Europe. The industrialization of the valley will complete the work of abandoning the local vineyards, leaving Cantina Garrone, and a few other realities, as the last defense of a truly difficult, impervious and very tiring agriculture: mountain viticulture. Cantina Garrone was founded in 1920 and since then its members, over several generations, have never stopped working hard to carry on an extraordinary and unique tradition. It is still today a family-run business, close to the first Alpine hills, with a certainly favorable climate, cool and ventilated, with beautiful sunny exposures, which since time immemorial have been the temple of Prünent, an ancient local clone of Nebbiolo from the Langhe . All around you can see terraces, created in every small ravine of even slightly flat land, supported by steps and dry stone walls, positioned on the slopes facing south, to the warm Alpine sun. The vineyards of the property are particularly prized thanks to this care obsessive attention that is reserved for them, with the presence of old vines, some even centuries old, supported by the old pre-phylloxera nineteenth-century "ungrafted" plants. Exclusively and inevitably manual processes that require hours and hours of hard work, in truly complicated and dangerous environmental situations, due to the verticality of the territory. The winery's production philosophy is based on respect for traditions and, therefore, the resulting wines are frank and authentic, truly responsive to the environment where they are born and grown.
