Mastrojanni

The history of the Mastrojanni winery is relatively recent; It's 1975, the lawyer Mastrojanni falls in love with these lands and buys the San Pio and Loreto farms, deciding to plant the first Sangiovese vineyards which, in part, still produce the company's wines today. In those years, there were very few people who started a winemaking adventure in Montalcino . Certainly others, before him, starting with that pioneer Biondi-Santi, had had the same experience and the territory had clearly responded that the best vine for these lands is Sangiovese Grosso , the only vine authorized to produce Brunello of Montalcino. Mastrojanni, wanting to make a great Brunello, plants almost exclusively Sangiovese. In those same years Maurizio Castelli, still currently the company's winemaker, became the reference consultant. And with him also arrives Andrea Machetti who offers to follow the evolution of the cellar full time.
It began in 1992 and her passionate work allowed Mastrojanni to grow abroad and in production, perhaps even surpassing the lawyer's initial dream. The Mastrojanni family lives in Rome and occasionally travels to Montalcino, so the Castelli-Machetti duo becomes irreplaceable. Maurizio Castelli, who in the meantime has become a world-famous oenologist for his great wines and is like Andrea, that is, an "anti-interventionist": he tries to let the wine do its own evolution, without intervening heavily with treatments, substances or anything else; everything must be as natural as possible to faithfully reflect the terroir. Thanks to the approach given by Andrea and Maurizio, Mastrojanni's wines continue to be rewarded and recognized as an excellence of the Montalcino area. For some time now the winery has changed hands and is under new ownership in the Illy group , but the attitudes, projects, passion and love for quality wine remain unchanged.
