The history of the Castello del Terriccio winery has its roots in very ancient times. The name of the company, in fact, derives from the castle of Doglia, also known as "del Terriccio", built in medieval times in Castellina Marittima, in the province of Pisa. The estate was originally born as a watchtower for enemies, and then became an illustrious cereal center by will of the Serafini Ferri counts, during the 1900s. The production of high-class wines began in 1993 under the guidance of Gian Annibale Rossi from Medelana, who is still at the head of the business today. In any case, the cultivation of vines in this particular part of Tuscany dates back to the Etruscan era, i.e. the period between 800 and 500 BC. It is, therefore, a thousand-year-old tradition, deeply rooted in the area. Currently the winery's vineyards occupy 60 hectares. Castello del Terriccio mainly uses vines of French origin, such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The high quality of the grapes depends not only on adequate exposure to the sun and a favorable climate, but also on the particular composition of the soil: the latter is rich in mineral salts, especially copper and iron. The company's staff is dedicated to the creation of high quality wines through a series of specific procedures, including separate vinification depending on the variety of grape and the relative maturation times. Usually the refinement begins in oak barriques or tonneaus and continues directly in the bottle, inside suggestive cellars. The Castello del Terriccio estate is famous in the Tuscan wine scene for the production of elegant wines with a strong personality. Lupicaia, for example, is excellent, intense and fragrant, an authentic guarantee for wine enthusiasts. Furthermore, the Tassinaia, complex and full-bodied, and the Castello del Terriccio, counted among the best Supertuscans, are famous. Thanks to these and other wines, the winery is also known abroad for the high quality of its vines and the products derived from them.
