Marchesi Antinori began investing in this area - one of the newest and most promising in Tuscany and all of Italy - at the beginning of the 1990s.
At that time the Nobile di Montepulciano had recently inaugurated his second Renaissance. But the wines of Montepulciano were actually already famous then and long before then.
Already in 1966, Nobile di Montepulciano was one of the first wines in Italy to obtain the DOC and this gave impetus to the replacement of the old mixed-cultivation vineyards with more specialized systems. The DOCG arrived 15 years later, in 1981, opening a new chapter. : some old companies introduce modern changes in the vineyards and cellars, new producers appear, not only Tuscan, and the whole area begins to qualify.
Starting from those same years, the great international fortune of the Supertuscans will then contribute to an ever-increasing interest in Made in Tuscany as a whole and will lead to radical transformations of the wine-growing situation in the area. The Cortona area, however, has only opened up to quality production in recent years. It became DOC in 1999 and saw a decisive reconversion of its vineyards from white to red grapes: the choice of vines such as Merlot and Syrah was therefore grafted onto an ancient local tradition and renewed it, together with Sangiovese. Innovation, tradition and quality go hand in hand, true excellence of Made in Italy.
