Russo Girolamo

The history of Girolamo Russo's winery is singular to say the least: in 2005 Girolamo abandoned a promising career as a pianist to dedicate himself body and soul to the activity of a winemaker. He therefore purchased this farm in Castiglione di Sicilia, at an altitude between 650 and 780 meters above sea level, where old vineyards that reach, and in some cases exceed, one hundred years of age are cultivated organically. Certainly a real hidden treasure, especially by recovering such old vineyards, in fact we are in the period in which the potential of the Etna area, now widely expressed, was not yet so evident and proclaimed. Among the vineyard varieties, Nerello Mascalese dominates, flanked by Nerello Cappuccino and some native white grapes of the area. The Girolamo Russo winery has a total of approximately 15 hectares of vineyards, divided into 3 distinct farms: San Lorenzo, Feudo and Feudo di Mezzo, which, in addition to identifying the terroir of origin, also give the name to three wines produced by the cellar . Management is totally artisanal: in the vineyard the dictates of organic farming are followed and, at the same time, peasant traditions, with ancient sapling systems alternating with new rows, where the main work is carried out strictly by hand. During the harvest, usually carried out during the month of October, the bunches are carefully selected manually. In the cellar, the grapes from each individual plot are vinified separately, in order to highlight every single organoleptic nuance in the wines produced. The winery, in a short time, has won the favor of the public and professionals, thus carving out a space for itself at the top of regional oenology, offering territorial labels of the highest quality level. This is how wines are born, the result of a project which, respecting nature, aims to enhance the characteristics of a terroir rich in aromas, tastes and colors that are truly unique in the world.
