Guado al Melo

The name of Guado al Melo is inextricably linked to that of Prof Scienza, from Trentino, a luminary for decades in the field of agronomic research. Already the son of wine-producing parents, Attilio has been frequenting the Bolgheri area since the end of the 70s: he collaborates with some local companies, follows the changes in the Bolgheri DOC denomination and coordinates viticultural zoning studies for the entire Bolgheri area. It is therefore an area he knows very, very well. We are still at the dawn of that fabulous wine district that we know today. Attilio Scienza, towards the end of the 90s, learned of the sale of the Guado al Melo farm; knows well that it is located in one of the best areas of the Denomination. We learn, from documents of the time, that the Vermentino, Trebbiano Toscano, Canaiolo Bianco and Nero, Malvasia Bianca and Nera, Sangiovese and other vines were already present in the vineyard. And indeed, at the end of the nineteenth century the presence of Cabernet sauvignon was reported and in the first half of the twentieth century of Merlot. The place is of magical beauty, secluded among the hills and surrounded by woods. So many reasons to fall in love and so the purchase is made and his son Michele takes over management, assisted by his wife.
The name is chosen, as per Tuscan tradition. Guado al Melo is in fact the ancient name of the locality, linked to a ford on the Fossa di Bolgheri stream. In 2002 the first official harvest took place, in 2004-2005 the definitive cellar was created, from a bio-architecture project and in the following years all the wines that are now in the cellar's portfolio were launched. In 2016 Guado al Melo was awarded the Emerging Company of the Year by Gambero Rosso.
