The Benanti winery stands on the slopes of Etna in Viagrande, in eastern Sicily; since the end of the 19th century the company has been concerned with recovering the most representative and historical vines of the place: the Carricante and the Nerello Mascalese. The vines that the winery takes care of today are also the native Nero d'Avola and Nerello Cappuccio and the "international" ones such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, Tannat and Petit Verdot. Sicilia IGT Nerello Cappuccio Benanti 2016 is a red wine that comes entirely from the native vine of the same name and is a rare vinification in purity, in the sense that it is traditionally blended with Nerello Mascalese; the cultivation area extends throughout the southern slope of Etna at an altitude of about 750 meters above sea level: we can easily speak of mountain viticulture. This element, combined with the type of soil (volcanic, therefore very rich in minerals and more) and the climate, causes the grapes to take on unique characteristics which will then be found in the wine, giving complexity and richness. The intense ruby colour, the aromas of red fruits with light hints of vanilla, its dry taste with a slightly and pleasantly acidic edge (deriving from the characteristics of the soil) and the good persistence, make Nerello Cappuccio Sicilia IGT Benanti 2016 a truly intriguing, spicy and robust, perfect for pairing with red meats and aged cheeses.
